USPA NEWS - In a truly uplifting display of unwavering support, a small town Nova Scotia family is rallying around their loved one, who is courageously battling a rare illness. While the life-changing surgery he needs is not available locally, it is accessible in the United States, offering a beacon of hope. However a journey to the United States for this life-saving surgery may be a challenge due to the dire state of his condition and not being able to fly. Family friend and spokesperson, Jessica Myra, has shared this family's heartbreaking story exclusively with USPA News 24 News.

At just 30 years old, Gavin is preparing for the most critical challenge of his life, and his loved ones in Fall River, Nova Scotia, Canada, are rallying around him in support. Conveniently situated near Halifax, home to some of the top-ranked hospitals on the east coast, Gavin is none the less taking proactive measures to access a life-altering surgical procedure in the United States, demonstrating his unwavering determination to take charge of his health, as the critical life saving surgery is not available in Canada.

Below are some of the highlights of my conversation with Jessica: "Born with a rare immune disorder called X-linked Agammaglobulinemia (XLA), Gavin has spent his entire life overcoming challenges most people could never imagine. Despite his strength and determination, years of complications from this condition have caused severe and irreversible damage to his lungs. Today, he is fighting for the chance to breathe freely again and for the opportunity to watch his children grow up."

Myra continued by saying: "Gavin is currently undergoing evaluation for a groundbreaking double lung and bone marrow transplant in Pennsylvania. This procedure offers something that once seemed impossible — not only replacing his damaged lungs but also treating the underlying immune disorder that has affected him since birth. This surgery could dramatically improve both his quality of life and his long-term future, giving him hope for years that once felt out of reach."

"While Gavin faces this difficult medical journey, his wife, Michela, has stepped away from work entirely to care for him full-time while also caring for their two young children. Together, they are carrying an overwhelming emotional, physical, and financial burden. Yet through every setback, every appointment, and every uncertainty, they continue to place their faith in God and trust in His plan."

"If approved for the transplant, their family will be required to relocate for an extended period of time while Gavin undergoes surgery, recovery, and intensive follow-up care. During this time, expenses will continue to grow — including travel, accommodations, meals, medical-related costs, childcare, household bills, and countless unexpected expenses that come with a journey of this magnitude."

"As we prepare to support Gavin and his family through this journey, we are seeking donations of items, services, gift certificates, gift baskets, and other auction-worthy contributions for an upcoming benefit auction. Every donated item will help raise funds to ease the financial burden they are facing. Financial donations are also deeply appreciated and will go directly toward helping the family manage the many expenses associated with treatment, travel, and time away from home."
"Most importantly, we ask for your prayers. Please pray for wisdom for Gavin’s medical team, strength for his family, successful approval for the transplant, and complete healing in the days ahead."
Jessica ended our conversation with this: "From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for standing with Gavin and his family through faith, love, prayer, and support. Every prayer, every random act of kindness and every time someone shares this story reminds them that they are not walking this journey alone."
