France’s 2026 wildfires are not just a question of numbers and hectares burned; they are the predictable outcome of a lethal combination: extreme heat, prolonged drought, winds above 50 km/h and fires that are, in nine cases out of ten, of human origin. In such conditions, a simple bushfire can rapidly turn into the kind of mega?fire now ravaging the Fontainebleau forest and forces the country to confront the structural weaknesses of its fire prevention and response system. The psychological profiles of arsonists often point to significant imbalance or distress, but whatever the motivation, the outcome is the same: in a landscape already on edge from heat and drought, a single lighter or match can trigger a chain reaction that overwhelms even experienced firefighting teams.

Political leaders are now openly discussing heavier sentences for arson, with penalties of up to ten years in prison being mentioned, and calling for better anticipation and prevention of megafires. Yet the debate cannot stop at repression alone.
