Lake George Wildfire Burning Out Of Control

Brian Teepell/USPA 24 News - The fire was last reported to encompass 288 hectares and remains classified as out of control. All evacuation orders and road closures are still in effect on Aylesford Road and North River Road in the communities of Morristown and Lake George.

The Lake George wildfire continues to be uncontrolled, which has been attributed to ongoing dry and windy conditions. Fortunately, no damage to structures has been reported. However, the fire's deep burn and today's anticipated high temperature will present a challenge.

Kings County has extended the State of Local Emergency for an additional 7-day period, until Monday, October 13th, or until the crisis is resolved, due to the ongoing wildfire in the Lake George area and in support of the evacuations.

Crews are diligently working to safeguard homes and other structures. Resources today comprise 35 Department of Natural Resources (DNR), 39 British Columbia and 23 local firefighters, 2 Newfoundland and 4 Northwest Territories planes, 1 DNR and 5 contracted helicopters, and 18 pieces of heavy equipment.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston had this to say, "This wildfire season has been a tough one for our province. Thank you to the first responders and firefighters who continue to answer the call, protect communities, and save lives."

The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) has opened a Reception Centre/Emergency Shelter at the Louis Millett Centre in New Minas. This resource has been utilized by many evacuees throughout this event.

Numerous agencies, including contracted security, the Department of Public Works, Department of Natural Resources Conservation officers, Department of Fisheries Conservation and Protection officers, and other unlisted agencies, are supporting the efforts. Nova Scotia Public Safety Field Communications has deployed resources, including trucks and personnel, to enhance and support radio coverage, while EHS Paramedics have placed their command units on standby.
