- "SPINOZA - Oeuvres Complètes" (SPINOZA - Complete Works) Edited in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Bouquins Editions. Presented by Thibaut Gress. Born in 1632 in Amsterdam to a modest Jewish Family, Baruch Spinoza became one of the Key fFgures of the Seventeenth-Century Dutch and European Enlightenment. As a Young Man, he was considered an Outstanding Student of the Talmud and a Promising Religious Scholar. But he soon found himself on the outside of the Orthodox Tradition due to his Radical and Unorthodox Opinions. The Influence of a New Orientation, inspired by the Philosophic Writings of René Descartes and Francis Bacon, among others, could be seen at a Very Young Age. In 1656 the Amsterdam rRbbis excommunicated Spinoza. He lived the Remainder of his Life as a Lens Grinder while writing Anonymously published Philosophic Treatises and covertly exchanging Letters with many of the Philosophically Minded Luminaries of the Broader European Enlightenment.
Spinoza´s Radically Democratic and Liberal Teaching came to symbolize the Rising Philosophic Outlook that became a Touchstone in the Fiery Religious and Political Controversies raging across Europe. In the Century after his Death, the Epithet of “Spinozism“ emerged as an Accusation hurled against those who openly professed Atheism, a Materialistic Metaphysics, and an Advocacy of Political Liberalism. Although Spinoza was often the Subject of Persecution as an Atheist in his own Day, his Writings played an Important Role in shaping Philosophy, Theology, and Politics in Future Centuries.
- TOM WOLFE : LE bûcher des Vanités - Un Homme, Un Vrai" (TOM WOLFE : The Bonfire Of The Vanities - A Man In Full). Edited in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Bouquins Editions. Preface by Nicolas Idier. Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr. was an American Author and Journalist widely known for his Association with New Journalism, a Style of News Writing and Journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated Literary Techniques. Wolfe began his Career as a Regional Newspaper Reporter in the 1950s, achieving National Prominence in the 1960s following the Publication of such Best-Selling Books as "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" and Two Collections of Articles and Essays, "Radical Chic & "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers" and "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby". In 1979, he published the Influential Book "The Right Stuff about the Mercury Seven astronauts", which was made into a 1983 Film of the same Name directed by Philip Kaufman.
His First Novel, "The Bonfire of the Vanities", published in 1987, was met with Critical Acclaim and also became a Commercial Success. It was adapted as a Major Motion Picture of the same name directed by Brian De Palma. It is a 1987 Satirical Novel. The Story is a Drama about Ambition, Racism, Social Class, Politics, and Greed in 1980s New York City and centers on Three Main Characters : WASP Bond Trader Sherman McCoy, Jewish Assistant District Attorney Larry Kramer, and British Expatriate Journalist Peter Fallow. The Novel was originally conceived as a Serial, it ran in 27 Installments in Rolling Stone starting in 1984. Tom Wolfe heavily revised it before it was published in Book Form. The Novel was a Bestseller and a Phenomenal Success, even in comparison with Wolfe's other Books. It has often been called the Quintessential Novel of the 1980s. The Title is a Reference to the Historical "Bonfire of the Vanities", which happened in 1497 in Florence (Italy), when the City was under the Rule of the Dominican Priest Girolamo Savonarola, who ordered the Burning of Objects that Church Authorities considered Sinful, such as Cosmetics, Mirrors, Books & Art.
Tom Wolfe's Second Novel, "A Man In Full" features a Number of Point-Of-View Characters. The Novel begins with the Characters learning of the Rumored Rape of a Young White Heiress by a Black Superstar Athlete, Fareek "The Cannon" Fanon. Though the Incident itself is Unimportant to the Lives of the Characters, the Potential for the Rumor to incite Race Riots in Metropolitan Atlanta has a Profound Effect on all of their Lives. Local Politics and Business Interests become involved, including the President of the Bank to which Croker is indebted, Roger Too White's Former Fraternity brother (now Mayor of Atlanta), and the Entirety of 'Respectable' Atlanta Society.
- EVELYN WAUGH "Hissez Le Grand Pavois" (Put Out More Flags) Published in FRANCE by Robert Laffont Editions. "Put Out More Flags", the Sixth Novel by Evelyn Waugh, was First Published by Chapman and Hall in 1942. The Title of the Novel comes from the Saying of an Anonymous Chinese Sage, quoted and translated by Lin Yutang in "The Importance of Living" (1937). The Book is dedicated to Randolph Churchill, who found a Service Commission for Waugh during the Second World War. The Novel is set during the First Year of the war and follows the Wartime Activities of Oharacters introduced in Evelyn Waugh's earlier Satirical Novels "Decline and Fall", "Vile Bodies" and "Black Mischief"... The Dormant Conflict of the "Phoney War" is reflected in the Activity of the Novel's Main Characters. Earnest would-be Soldier Alistair Trumpington finds himself engaged in Incomprehensible Manoeuvres instead of Real Combat, while Evelyn Waugh's recurring ne'er-do-well Basil Seal, first encountered as the Emperor Seth's Advisor in "Black Mischief", finds Ample Opportunity for amusing Himself in the Name of the War Effort.
Evelyn Waugh was an English Writer of Novels, Biographies, and Travel Books, and he was also a Prolific Journalist and Book Reviewer. His most Famous Works include the Early Satires "Decline and Fall" (1928) and "A Handful of Dust" (1934), the Novel "Brideshead Revisited" (1945), and the Second World War Trilogy "Sword of Honour" (1952““61). He is recognised as One of the Great Prose Stylists of the English Language in the 20th Century.
Evelyn Waugh converted to Catholicism in 1930 after his First Marriage failed. His Traditionalist Stance led him to strongly oppose all Attempts to reform the Church, and the Changes by the Second Vatican Council (1962““65) greatly disturbed his Sensibilities, especially the Introduction of the Vernacular Mass. That blow to his Religious Traditionalism, his dislike for the Welfare State Culture of the Postwar World, and the Decline of his Health all darkened his Final Years, but he continued to write. He displayed to the World a Mask of Indifference, but he was capable of Great Kindness to those whom he considered his Friends. After his Death in 1966 he acquired a Following of new Readers through the Film and Television Versions of his Works.
