Heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems, cause rivers and streams to rise, and create dangerous conditions on roads. Residents should stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and alerts. They should avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
Now is the time to ensure your emergency kits are stocked, mobile devices are charged and household emergency plans are up to date. Those living in areas prone to flooding should take additional precautions to protect their homes and property.
Emergency management officials, municipalities and first responders are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to respond as needed. I want to thank them for their continued dedication to keeping Nova Scotians safe.
I urge everyone to stay alert, follow the advice of local authorities and look out for neighbours who may need additional support. By preparing ahead of time, we can help reduce the impact of severe weather and keep our communities safe.
