Awarded for life, the title of Master of Art distinguishes craftsmen for their career and their involvement in the renewal and transmission of crafts. Created in 1994 by the Ministry of Culture and implemented since 2012 by INMA, the Masters of Art – Students program was supported by the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation from 2016 to 2022. It is now a unique initiative in Europe, intended to perpetuate know-how that is only practiced in a few workshops. Since its creation, the official title of Master of Art has been awarded to 149 professionals with remarkable and rare know-how. Once appointed, each Master of Art has the mission of passing on his know-how to the student with whom he has been selected. On Tuesday January 24, 2023, the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, in the presence of Luc Lesenecal, President of the National Institute of Crafts (INMA), distinguished eight professionals in the arts and crafts during the official award ceremony Master of Arts titles. During the three years of the Master of Art - Student program, the pair benefits from an allowance allowing them to free up production time to devote themselves to transmission. It also benefits from support from INMA: connection with the network of Masters of Art and Living Heritage, advice on the economic development of the activity, provision of resources, etc.
A selection procedure is organized every three years by INMA. The study of applications is entrusted to a jury chaired by the General Directorate of Artistic Creation of the Ministry of Culture. The professional future of the students and the reflection of the Master of Arts candidates on the transmission process are at the center of the debates. These pairs were chosen by the jury with respect for parity, but also for the representativeness of the territories. This year, five Regions are represented in six artistic professions (Brittany, Ile de France, Normandy, Pays de la Loire, Nouvelle-Aquitaine).

The Minister of Culture congratulates and thanks these eight new Masters of Art who are involved in transmitting to their students the virtuosity of their know-how and entrepreneurial commitment.

“While the law of the instantaneous and the disposable exerts constant pressure on our lives, crafts allow us to reconnect with the values of attention, patience, precise gesture. Unique and durable, the objects born from these expert and passionate hands are objects of tradition as much as objects of the future. I am proud to award eight new titles of Master of Art to exceptional crafts
