20 CARS ON THE GRID

USPA NEWS - As in its debut season, there will be 20 Formula E cars on the grid for all of the races of the 2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship.
Earlier this week, it was announced that eight manufacturers had been accepted to produce powertrains for season two of the world´s first all-electric racing series. This led to confusion in some quarters, who mistook the manufacturers for entrants.
The eight manufacturers, who will be able to produce components such as motors, invertors and gearboxes, are ABT Sportsline, Andretti, Mahindra, Motomatica, NEXTEV TCR, Renault Sport, Venturi Automobiles and Virgin Racing Engineering. These manufacturers have to be prepared to supply more than one team with new components they produce.
“One of the key elements of Formula E is the rule that we have implemented that all of the teams can raise their hand and say “˜I would like to have your powertrain´ and the manufacturers are obliged to sell to any given team at a maximum capped price,“ states Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag. “With this rule small teams will be able to buy big teams technology and we can achieve a bigger level of competition.“
In addition to the new manufacturers´ components, the teams will also have the option of running all, or some of, the current powertrain and gearbox, which is supplied by McLaren and Hewland.
